Watching and Waiting

Neo was sleeping. It was a deep, total, undisturbed sleep. From the dark shadows still trapped under his eyes it was obvious this rest was well earned. Sprawled across his hard bunk, twisted in the single thin blanket supplied to every crewman, he looked the very epitome of worn out. Not even the persistent clanking of a loose cable in the Core bothered him as he snored on.

She was worried, a deep seeded fear that ate at the pit of her stomach. The slop that she swallowed did nothing to abate the hunger that nagged her night and day. Telling night from day was another matter all together, the two blended together on a canvas of timelessness. She felt alone, though she was surrounded by several people who had relied upon her as well as each other countless times. Again, she felt hollow and quickly shoved the container of food away.

He has always hated parties. Too shy, perhaps. Distracted, withdrawn…drawn, period, away from the masses of humanity he has never understood.


He stood with his arms crossed, back turned, and tried to let the dark wall consume him. Choi was across the room, somewhere, with smoke and Dujour curled around him. Thomas cursed himself for coming in the first place. One random computer error mixed with a sleep-crusted brain and suddenly one of Dujour’s miscellaneous tattoos became prophetic. He should never have come.
