Jayman’s Second Oracle Visit

KITCHEN / JAYMAN:

JAYMAN puts away his sunglasses and stands in the kitchen doorway. The aroma of chocolate fills the air.

ORACLE:

ORACLE sits at the kitchen table: “Well, come in, come in, don’t be shy.”

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN approaches the table.

ORACLE:

ORACLE: “My my, look at you. Nice suit.”

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN smiles, looks down at himself: “Thanks, I try to be fashionable.”

ORACLE:

ORACLE laughs: “It’s been years… What can I do for you?”

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN’s smile fades, “I’ll be as honest as I can… I don’t, I don’t know what to do… I feel–” He sighs.

ORACLE:

ORACLE: “What do you feel?”

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN closes his eyes: “I feel lost… lost in the dark… and I don’t know which way to go.”

ORACLE:

ORACLE nods: “Yes, there is no question of that.”

ORACLE leans back, gazes at JAYMAN thoughtfully, then continues: “There is no question you will see darker times, turbulent times ahead, before they get brighter…”

ORACLE takes a puff from her cigarette, and blows out a cloud of smoke: “You see this cloud of smoke? The future floats like this cloud… the past fades into a haze… and even the present can seem like a fog… But when the time is right, you will find your guiding light, your lighthouse in the fog… You will find her.”

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN: “Her?”

ORACLE:

ORACLE smiles: “Why not? Her, him, it… The word doesn’t matter.”

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN smiles back, looking down.

ORACLE:

ORACLE: “But when you find your light, the fog will clear away…”

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN: “And the pain?”

ORACLE:

ORACLE gently shakes her head: “The pain never goes away… With clarity, that pain can give you direction… and purpose… but it never goes away.”

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN nods.

ORACLE:

ORACLE gets up and brings over a tray of chocolate-chip cookies. She smiles: “Here, take a cookie. Chocolate chip is your favorite, right?”

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN nods, takes a cookie, and stares at the Oracle.

ORACLE:

ORACLE puts down the tray: “Look at it this way… That pain is a reminder that you are still alive here…” She pats her heart.

JAYMAN:

JAYMAN nods, then quietly says: “Thank you.”

ORACLE:

ORACLE smiles: “Don’t mention it.”
